Lucky Alonso wins Korean Grand Prix comedy

Bookmark and Share Fernando Alonso was the lucky winner of the Korean Grand Prix that took place in a comedy Yeongam construction site. Following last minute track construction and modifications for safety reasons a rainy downpour almost could cancel the inaugural Korean Grand Prix whose only contribution to the championship was to blow down RedBull Racing drivers leading gap for the title.

In fact, the start of the race delayed by over an hour due to rain and proper racing finally got underway on a slippery circuit with 18 laps already notched up under the safety car.

Nico Rosberg was the bravest off the start, passing Hamilton for 4rth as most drivers took a tentative approach. But joy soon turned to despair for Rosberg as he came across Webber in the middle of the track who ran wide on the exit of turn 12, lost the rear of his car and spun back into the racing line. Rosberg was unable to avoid the Red Bull and slammed into it, ending both drivers' race on the spot.

Webber commented:
"It was totally my fault, I got on the kerb on the exit of Turn 12 and it was a very slow-motion moment off the back of that kerb - it was my mistake and it wasn't my day. I thought I'd managed to catch it, but I lost the car and made contact with the wall, nothing too heavy, but it was enough to bring the car back to the other side of the track and then Nico (Rosberg) hit me, which wrecked his race as well. Conditions were okay by the time we were racing - on the edge, but okay. Today didn't help me with the Championship, but I can absolutely still win it; this was only my second non-finish of the year. Positions aren't the most important thing, points are and they can change very quickly. I'm back with the others now on points, but there are still two races to go and I'll do my absolute best."

Former Dietrich Mateschitz's partner in Toro Rosso, Gerhard Berger insisted at Austrian Servus TV that Mark Webber deliberately rolled back his car on the circuit in order to crash one of his incoming title rivals and especially Fernando Alonso who actually managed to avoid him.
“He could have hit the brakes and stopped the car at the wall.
He took out Rosberg, but it was the wrong one. I think in his mind he would have preferred Alonso or Hamilton... He goes off and he knows it’s over. In this moment you’re frustrated and a thousand thoughts go through your head. It’s very obvious, you can see his wheels are not locked up. Perhaps he had a brake problem, but I don’t think so.”

Vettel, Alonso and Hamilton held position at the restart but conditions were still bad with drivers complaining of excessive spray. On lap 31 Sebastien Buemi attempted an over-aggressive move on Timo Glock, who was running well in 13th, and took both cars out. With crash barriers lining the circuit and no cranes to extract the cars the safety car was called out again.

The caution period sparked a flood of activity in the pits as almost all the cars, except Vettel and Alonso, pitted for intermediate tyres straight away. The leading pair pitted on the next lap but the Ferrari stop was slower due to a sticking wheel nut and Hamilton moved up to second. However, on the restart Hamilton out-braked himself due to low tyre pressure into turn one and Alonso regain his -as was proven- victorious position!

The leading drivers didn't wanted to risk any further and instead ignited a fastest lap competition, but were warned by their teams to preserve their tyres as they couldn't risk another pitstop until the end.

On lap 41 Vitaly Petrov had a huge accident in his Renault losing control of the rear end in the final corner and slammed against the barriers without further injury.

By 75% distance the drivers had stayed out long enough to earn full points that would boost their chances for the title against crashing leader Webber but suddenly Vettel came past the start/finish lane with a sick sounding engine and on the following straight his Renault V8 blew up in a plume of smoke demolishing his chances for the victory as well for the championship eventhough he appeared to have been so far Webber's main title contender. That was another painful race for RedBull Racing that experienced another racing "Waterloo" although their initial race domination.

From that point onwards Hamilton and Alonso remained calm and smart controlling their pace and their tyres for a secure podium finish in the fading light.
Alonso commented after the race:
"It is a great feeling winning this way, as it was a very difficult victory, given the track conditions. Especially at the start, the situation on track and in terms of visibility was really precarious. That was the most worrying time, because I knew it would be an achievement just to stay on the track. We had never driven here in the wet and so there was no reference point. Webber's retirement slightly changed our approach because, all in all, it would have been sufficient to finish on the podium without taking too many risks. The final stages were particularly difficult because half the track was almost dry and the tyres were getting ruined really quickly. I witnessed both Red Bull problems from very close up: in these situations you try and stay super-concentrated, because you are coming from a high speed corner and there is no time to think. Clearly, this was a great help for our championship chances, but luck proves that Formula 1 is not just about the maths! If you then think about what happened at races such as Valencia and Silverstone, you can really say that what goes around comes around. Now there are still fifty points up for grabs: Red Bull are still favourite, but we will continue to do our utmost and try to always get onto the podium. The car has improved so much in the second half of the year thanks to continuous updates: maybe we have come away with more than we expected, but we know the situation can change from one weekend to the next. All the same, these results are fully deserved by the team and my dream is to see everyone in it happy..."

Massa moved up to third with all the drama to finish ahead of Schumacher, who recorded his second good result in a row in an attempt to boost his self-confidence ahead of the 2011 season. Robert Kubica took advantage of the two Williams drivers' tyre wear, as Nico Hulkenberg had to pit for another set of intermediates and Rubens Barrichello had a small spin, and finished 5th although he had a rough race as well.

Tonio Liuzzi also made up a place on Barrichello to finish a season's best sixth place. The Williams driver finished in seventh ahead of the two Saubers of Kamui Kobayashi and Nick Heidfeld in eighth and ninth that secured more points for their team. Nico Hulkenberg rounded off the points positions in tenth, while Jenson Button finished 12th.

Button's title chances are now all but over and he complained of a complete and utter lack of grip. He later said that he would continue to fight until it became mathematically impossible to take the championship, despite being 42 points behind.
The result of the race means that Alonso now leads the drivers' standings from Webber by 11 points and Hamilton by 21 points boosting his title hopes, with Vettel dropping to 4rth a whole victory back (25 points).
