After rumors that Jacques Villeneuve is about to return to F1 as a team-owner and driver at the same time under a possible "Villeneuve Racing" team, the Italian racing team Durango that was founded in 1980 having a valuable experience in sports car racing confirmed its actual involvement to the mysterious Villeneuve Racing F1 project.
In April, the former GP2 outfit, announced it has lodged an application to fill the 13th spot on next year's F1 grid as a prerequisite from its investors to fund the team while Jacques Villeneuve has already confirmed that he is working on a F1 project.
Durango owner Ivone Pinton confirmed to the Italian website 422race.com that Villeneuve is helping the team to enter F1.
"Jacques is an energetic and willing guy. I really hope together we will find a place. For Durango, to work with him is an honor and a privilege. We are talking about the son of a myth and a former World Champion. Even if I know him since he was 16. And I always said that, whenever he's OK, he's a great driver, who won in every series."
Pinton did not reveal anything about potential technical partners, although it’s worth noting that having ended its deal with HRT, Dallara could be available. Durango is also known to have talked to Toyota to acquire the unraced 2010-specification TF110 chassis.
Regarding Villeneuve’s role, Pinton said: “Together with being driver, I'm sure he will actively contribute to the company. I think he's preparing himself the job to do after he quits driving."
Durango ran Villeneuve in the Speedcar series in 2009, and was also involved with Giancarlo Fisichella's GP2 team.
