Mansel family ready for 2010 24Heures du LeMans Race

Bookmark and Share The Triple Crown of Motorsport is an elusive distinction earned by only a handful of drivers in the history of motor racing and Nigel Mansell decided to take the challenge in an all-Mansell lineup along with his two sons Leo and Greg.

In order to score the Triple Crown, a driver has to win either the Indianapolis 500 or the Indy/CART title, plus either the Monaco Grand Prix or the F1 drivers' title and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Mansel is one of only a handful drivers to have been crowned champion in both F1 and Indy during his racing career in 90s, alongside Emerson Fittipaldi, Graham Hill, Mario Andretti and Jacques Villeneuve. the French-Canadian was the latest driver who tried to score a triple crown in 2007 without lack finishing just second but time has come for Mansell to give his shot as well along with his sons. Mansell brothers are campaigning the entire lemans series season in the top-tier LMP1 category driving a Ginetta-Zytek GZ09S prototype and their champion father will join them for the traditional race.

Nigel, you've missed the chance to prepare for Le Mans at the LMS 1000km of Spa.
"Yes we wanted to improve some specific areas on the car, including the balance that was not satisfactory..I hope it is solved now. The team has also worked hard on the reliability of the car. Our test session at Silverstone went well and I am really optimistic about the fact that the car now behaves much better."

Your car features the #5, is this number very dear to you?
"Yes, it is, I have always raced with #5 - and I thank the ACO for allowing me this privilege, and everyone who made this commitment possible. This is the first time I have raced at Le Mans and our participation is unique and very special. A father and son have raced here before, but never has a father and both his sons taken part in the race. It's a great adventure even before anything has reached the track. ...The atmosphere here at scrutineering really is exceptional , it's a great opportunity, people are extremely professional around us and are very friendly. The public are very enthusiastic and this is only Monday! "

What feedback did you have during your F1 career about Le Mans?
"Le Mans has created so many highlights over the years it is difficult to choose just one, but in my mind it was the Jaguar victories that stand out, the Allan McNish’s victories and my son’s first 24 Hours of Le Mans, and of course the success of Peugeot.. all of these have remained etched in my mind. Living through the 24 Hours on television is one thing but being here really awesome "

Mansell and sons aren't expecting to win in their first year at LeMans, they're in it for the long haul and are targeting an overall win within the next few years. To do that, they'll have to beat the likes of Audi, Peugeot and Aston Martin with a privateer entry. But if any underdog can do it, their name couldn't be anything other than Mansell.
