FIA bans bizzare diffuser loophole

Bookmark and Share

FIA announced that several teams will have to make modifications to their diffuser designs ahead of the Australian Grand Prix after a rule clarification concerning the exact dimensions of the starter motor hole .

Discussions between the FIA and four teams - meant to be Force India, McLaren, Mercedes and Renault - took place in Bahrain about the size and shape of starter motor holes in their diffusers which were believed to be abnormally too wide. While this was not a technical breach of the rules and a controversy similar to the one of 2009 season about Brawn GP's double-deck diffuser, FIA's outcome was that it was not in accordance with the spirit of racing.

As a result of FIA inspections, a note has been sent out to F1 teams clarifying the exact dimensions permitted. This will mean these four teams will have to make immediate changes on their car's diffuser before the unofficial practice of Australian Grand Prix.
