Ecclestone visions US Grand Prix under NYC scenery
After a call from former Formula One Champion Mario Andretti to return F1 to the United States, Bernie Ecclestone is pushing for a race in the Atlantic coast around the New York City by the 2012, when a Rome Grand Prix will be also on schedule.
"I'm trying for 2012, opposite Manhattan in New Jersey with skyscrapers in the background," he told Gazzetta dello Sport. "Fifteen minutes from the centre of New York to the circuit. [It would be] a wonder.", Ecclestone quoted.
However, in the middle of an economic crisis in America it is unlikely that any city or state government would risk to raise a funding for an F1 urban race just like Montreal or Melbourne. Thus it should be preferable to organize the event in an privately administrated Speedway just like the Indianapolis Motor Speedway which hosted the US GP from 2000 through 2007. Unfortunately the US Grand Prix was removed from F1 calendar because Bernie Ecclestone and then IMS president Tony George could not agree on the sanctioning fee with an agreement gap of less than $10 million apart.
